What is the history of Calistoga, California?
The Wappo tribe inhabited the upper Napa Valley in late 18th-century Spanish colonial times. Calistoga was named by the Wappo people “Nilektsonoma” which means “Chicken Hawk Place”.
The Mexican government secularized and sold off mission estates after the Mexican Independence, and in the 1830s and 1840s, it divided up much of the Napa Valley into sizable ranchos. Anglo settlers came to Calistoga in the 1840s.
In 1846, Samuel Brannan led a Mormon settlement expedition via the ship Brooklyn which landed on Yerba Buena, now San Francisco. Brannan established the first English newspaper in San Francisco- the California Star and went on to become the first millionaire in California due to the finding of gold in Coloma. Brannan also acquired over 2, 000 acres (8km2) of land to convert the natural springs of Calistoga into a spa resembling Saratoga Springs in New York. Brannan gave Calistoga its name in 1867, having confused the phrase “Saritoga of California” with “Calistoga of Sarifornia”. In 1862, Brannan’s Hot Springs Resort around Mt Lincoln catered to the upper class, and is now known as the Indian Springs Resort and Brannan Cottage Inn.
The construction of the Napa Valley Railroad Company track finished in 1868 and opened Calistoga to people from the upper Napa Valley. Calistoga boomed in the industries of mining, agriculture, and tourism.
Giuseppe Musante began to drill for a cold water well at the Railway Exchange and ended up discovering a hot water source in 1920. Musante established a bottling business in 1924 which sold Calistoga Sparkling Mineral Water. This business continued to grow when Elwood Sprenger purchased the company in 1970 and became the Calistoga Water Company of today.
Calistoga, California was incorporated on January 6, 1886 and in 2001, was made a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
